For South Carolina FamiliesAlzheimer's Care for U.S. Patients for South Carolina Families
Cuba's Alzheimer's program is specifically designed for American families — with English-speaking coordinators, U.S. travel authorization support, HSA/FSA payment guidance, coordination with U.S. neurologists, and telemedicine follow-up after returning home. South Carolina has approximately 95,000 residents with Alzheimer's. South Carolina has one of the fastest-growing senior populations in the nation, driving increasing Alzheimer's prevalence. The state's coastal retirement communities and rural interior face significant barriers to intensive dementia rehabilitation. Charleston and Columbia airports offer connecting flights to Havana via Miami or Fort Lauderdale.

How Cuba's Program Serves American Families
Cuba's Alzheimer's program has been serving international patients for decades, and SMC Salud has specific expertise in coordinating care for American families. The program is designed to address the unique needs of U.S. patients — from travel authorization to coordination with domestic physicians.
For American families, the program includes: English-speaking coordinators available throughout the stay for translation, support, and communication with family back home; U.S. travel authorization support (letter of medical necessity, treatment confirmation, guidance on approved travel categories); payment options (secure payment gateway accepts U.S. credit cards, HSA/FSA guidance, potential tax deductibility); coordination with U.S. neurologists (comprehensive medical report shared with the patient's domestic physician for coordinated care); and telemedicine follow-up (periodic remote consultations with the Cuban neurology team after returning to the U.S.).
The program is complementary to U.S. care — patients continue their domestic medications (cholinesterase inhibitors, memantine, lecanemab, etc.) and follow-up with their U.S. neurologist. Cuba's intensive rehabilitation and NeuroEPO research are added to, not substituted for, the patient's existing treatment plan.
No treatment currently cures Alzheimer's disease. Cuba's program aims to slow cognitive decline, maintain function, and improve quality of life. NeuroEPO is investigational and not FDA-approved. Treatment suitability is determined after individual medical evaluation. Individual outcomes vary.
