An overview of the therapeutic vaccine developed by Cuba's Center of Molecular Immunology, its mechanism of action targeting the EGF pathway, and its role in the international landscape of cancer immunotherapy.

CIMAvax-EGF represents one of Cuba's most significant medical biotechnology innovations. Developed by the Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM) in Havana, it is a therapeutic vaccine — designed to treat disease rather than prevent it — targeting advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

The vaccine works through a unique mechanism: it stimulates the patient's immune system to produce antibodies against Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), a protein that tumors rely on to grow and spread. By depriving cancer cells of this signal, tumor growth slows and patient survival is extended. CIMAvax-EGF is typically administered as maintenance therapy following completion of standard first-line treatment.

The vaccine has completed Phase III trials in Cuba and is currently undergoing international clinical trials, including in the United States. It is part of a broader Cuban approach that combines biotechnology innovation with comprehensive patient care, administered under the supervision of experienced oncology teams in specialized clinical facilities with full supportive care and monitoring.
